Install NVIDIA Driver on Fedora 12 Beta (64bit)

Enable the rpm-fusion repositories.

Download packages from http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=1763452:
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-190.42-1.fc12.x86_64.rpm
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-190.42-1.fc12.x86_64.rpm

Install it:

$sudo yum install livna-config-display system-config-display

Download http://leigh123linux.fedorapeople.org/pub/srpm/nvidia-kmod-190.42-3.fc12.src.rpm and install it,
then change your directory to /root/rpmbuild/SPECS

Build the rpm packages:

# rpmbuild bb target=x86_64 nvidia-kmod.SPEC

then you should get the four files in your rpmbuild folder /root/rpmbuild/RPMS/x86_64/:

#ls
akmod-nvidia-190.42-3.fc12.x86_64.rpm
kmod-nvidia-190.42-3.fc12.x86_64.rpm
kmod-nvidia-2.6.31.1-56.fc12.x86_64-190.42-3.fc12.x86_64.rpm
nvidia-kmod-debuginfo-190.42-3.fc12.x86_64.rpm

move xorg nvidia files to the x86_64 folder: xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-*-190.42-1.fc12.x86_64.rpm, then install them, six files, together.

# rpm -ivh *.rpm

There must be a final step to finish your driver installation:
edit your /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf to add the line:

blacklist nouveau

and edit your starting manager /etc/grub.conf to add the parameter to the end of kernel line:

nouveau.modeset=0

Then you can see your Linux Display as you do before.

  1. Recently, many fedora and nvidia fans visit this post, I hope this post is helpful for your configuration. If there’s any problem, please leave a message. I’ll do my best.

    Enjoy!

  2. I can not understand why Fedora 12 has psycho problems with the nvidia card. If someone doesn’t search how to install the nvidia drivers, Fedora 12 (to me) can not work on 3d graphics. With Fedora 11 I used autoten to do it in a moment. Now I shall wait some days to discover an other howto. What is the reason for all this trouble. Everyone bought the nvidia card , it is not stollen. The nvidia factory gives drivers for linux. SO WHAT IS THE PSYCHO PROBLEM HERE and WHO HAS IT ? Anyway , Iam still ok with my mind.

  3. You are right fanisatt.

I’m thinking to the same problems, I cannot understand what is the big problme with fedora12 or Nvidia drivers. I think Fedora 12 is not stable release, “it’s just released”… This is very
I’m not satisfied with fedora 12.

  4. I agree with the last 2 posts. I’m trying to upgrade from Fedora 11 to Fedora 12, but have run into the same Nvidia problems. I want to do more than surf the internet and use OpenOffice. Is it too much to ask? I want to uninstall Nouveau and use the official Nvidia driver. It shouldn’t be that difficult. I’ll have to keep waiting until I can figure it out or wait for a howto that works. So far Fedora 12 has been a bad release. Had issues with Nvidia and also NetworkManager.

  5. This nvidia driver issue is nuts. I really wish the Fedora crew would pull it together. It seems the releases are getting more and more bleeding edge to the point were something doesn’t work for a lot of people.

In F11 it was Pulse Audio… Within hours of release (and through beta testing) there were issues. Now nvidia issues with F12.

Fedora has become unusable. It’s sad. I’ve been a loyal Red Hat guy since before RH 5. The last good Fedora was 10. It seemed like everything worked.
