Solutions of some problems of Fedora 8 on ASUS Z99Ht58DC-SL

Introduction: I have not renew my blog for a long time because of having a cold. Now, I am at school with good health. I know that Fedora 8 was released last year, but I have no resources, especially my own computer, to install it. I got a notebook which model is ASUS Z99Ht58DC-SL. The process of installation will not be detailed. I explain how to solve the problems on it.

1. Starting problems

After installation, when you start the linux system, the words appeared on the screen "Unable to access resume device (...)", then the system cannot start. You could start the system with that you press any key to active the grub starting option after the GRUB prompts, and wait for a while, generally more than 10 seconds, then choose the Fedora (2.6.23.1-42.fc8) to start. This is a problem caused by the kernel. Updating the kernel to 2.6.23.15-137.fc8 could solve it.

2. Sound card problem

When I start fedora, the sound card didnot work, because the model can't be detected the sound card "High Definition Audio" devices properly. Adding the correct model to the sound card driver's entry in /etc/modprobe.conf will force the driver to use that model, e.g. options sound-card-0 model=lenovo . Options for this driver are documented in the file /usr/share/doc/kernel-doc-/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt in the kernel-doc package. Because that the PCM device is ALC 861VD, in the configuration file, you could find Module snd-hda-intel, after this line, ALC 861VD could be found. so the correct model could make you sound card work well.

I solved the above two problems, however, there still is a problem: I cannot restart the system when using the command reboot or chooing restart button on the "Shut Down" menu. The system prompts: restarting system, but when I wait for a long time, it doesnot work to restart the system. so I had to press the power switch to halt the computer, then press it again to start the system.
