Geometric whirlpools revealed

Bizarre geometric shapes that appear at the centre of swirling vortices in planetary atmospheres might be explained by a simple experiment with a bucket of water. (from Nature Newsblog)

When the speed of the bucket of water is high enough, the shape of the whirlpool is not circle, which we think it?certainly?as circle. But the researchers at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby have revealed that the cental whirlpools are?of stars, squares, pentagons and hexagons.

Similar polygonal shapes?were reported in the?flows in the atmosphere of our planet and others, like hurricane. These natural shapes of flow?have never been fully explained.

Maybe the CFD codes, like Star-CD, FLUENT, PHOENICS, can simulate the bizarre shapes of rotating flow, so that we can understand and explain the strange phenominon of?the special?flow. This is a mechanical problem.
